once upon a time, nine families lived on a hill by the northeastern coast of taiwan.
the steep and wiggly road made it extremely difficult for the families to travel down to the village below. therefore, whenever one family happens to go shopping down in the village, they would always remember to buy 9 of everything to share with their neighbors.
yeap, thats the story of "jiu-fan" which literally means nine portions in taiwanese/mandarin. HA! us taiwanese are just so creative.
